FirmoGraphs’ President Dave Cox attended the “American Coal Ash Association Winter Membership Meeting” in Scottsdale, Arizona on February 4, 2020.  The two-day conference included association meetings on Day 1 and a technical presentation session on Day 2.

Dave and John Priebe, PE, Associate Vice President, AECOM delivered a presentation on “How Much CCR is Out There”, highlighting quantities and locations of CCR material and opportunities for beneficial use of coal combustion products (CCPs) in an evolving regulatory climate.

Some key takeaways included the following:

  • It is important to understand today’s dynamic regulatory environment with respect to federal and state requirements for CCRs
  • Substantial opportunities exist for CCPs to be beneficially used
  • Data analysis techniques, including visualization and mapping, are instrumental in helping owner/operators identify these smart beneficiation opportunities
  • Closure decisions can and should be made to manage risks and maximize overall societal benefit, and should consider environmental, social, and economic factors

On a side note, Dave reported that it was chilly for Scottsdale, but beautiful.  It is incredible how much good work can be accomplished meeting with industry peers face-to-face.  The consensus was “time well spent” for all involved.
