North Dakota DOT Planned Spending Increased by 14%

We recently processed the latest transportation improvement program from North Dakota. Here are the insights we observed. 

In the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) covering the 2024-2027 fiscal years, the State of North Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) detailed plans to spend nearly $3 billion on transportation projects, increasing 14% from $2.7 billion in the 2023-2026 STIP. The current STIP has 875 line items, compared to 897 line items in the prior STIP. The table below breaks down the State of North Dakota DOT's planned capital spending by business area categorized by FirmoGraphs for its last two STIPs.

Most Significant Increase in Williston and Bismarck Cities

Almost all of the business areas increased. Williston City has the highest planned spending in the recent STIP, increased by 76%. The increase goes to a new project, the 85 N Grassy Butte To Watford City, worth $286 million. Bismarck City also increased by 15% with funding towards new and ongoing projects. On the Contrary, Fargo reduced its planned spending due to 35 projects that will be completed in 2023.


Nearly $300 Million Programmed For 85 N Grassy Butte to Watford City

The State of North Dakota Department of Transportation has three notable line items. The most significant project is the 85 N Grassy Butte To Watford City, worth $286 million under the Williston City. Grand Forks City also received a notable line item, the reconstruction of the 42 Nd St/Demers Rr Grade Separation, worth $35 million. Lastly, $41 million is planned for the 10 Be Main Av (University To 25Th Street) which includes reconstruction, watermain and sanitary sewer, under the City of Fargo.
