Manatee County, Florida, Planned Capital Spending Increased By 58%

We recently processed the latest capital improvement program from Manatee County, Florida. Here are the insights we observed. 

In the CIP covering the 2024-2028 fiscal years, Manatee County, Florida, detailed plans to spend $1.6 billion on capital projects, an increase of 58% from $995 million in its 2023-2027 CIP. The current CIP has 640 line items, compared to 576 line items in the prior CIP. The table below breaks down Manatee County’s planned capital spending by business area for its last two CIPs.

Substantial Increase in Wastewater and Transportation

The Wastewater category doubled its planned spending due to the addition of the North Regional Water Reclamation Facility Expansion 12.5 MGD. There has also been a significant increase in the Transportation category for existing projects, including 44th Ave E - 44th Ave Plaza E - Lakewood Ranch Blvd. A new project, the Moccasin Wallow Road Segment 5 from US 301 to SR 62, has also been added to the same category.


Over $200 Million Programmed Water Reclamation Expansion

Manatee County, Florida, has two notable line items valued at over $100 million and two at over $40 million. The largest line item is the North Regional Water Reclamation Facility Expansion 12.5 MGD, worth $209 million, under the Wastewater category. This project is a 5 MGD expansion to the NRWRF. Other notable line items include:

  • Southwest Water Reclamation Facility Expansion to 18 MGD - worth $193 million, under the Wastewater category. 
  • 44th Ave E - 44th Ave Plaza E - Lakewood Ranch Blvd - worth $93 million, under the Transportation category. This project includes the construction of approximately three miles of roadway improvements from 44th Avenue Plaza East to Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. It also consists of a four-lane divided roadway with sidewalks, bike lanes/multi-use paths, street lighting, an overpass over I-75, and a crossing over a reclaimed water storage lake.
  • Moccasin Wallow Road Segment 5 from US 301 to SR 62 - worth $45 million, under the Transportation category. This project provides the construction of the inside lane on each side to create a 6-lane facility and the construction of a 30/- acre stormwater storage facility, including lake and wetland storage.
