In the CIP covering the 2025–2030 fiscal years, the Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA) detailed plans to spend $133 million on capital projects, an increase of 71% from $78 million in its 2024–2029 CIP. The current CIP has expanded significantly in both scope and value, with investments targeting energy recovery, plant infrastructure, and system upgrades. Energy and Treatment Projects Lead Growth

Planned spending at the Central Treatment Plant more than doubled, largely driven by strategic investments in Renewable Natural Gas, sludge handling upgrades, and infrastructure modernization. Spending for the Interceptor System also grew modestly, sustaining long-term conveyance reliability.

MCUA has three notable line items valued at over $10 million each in the 2025–2030 CIP:

  • Renewable Natural Gas – $31.2 million
  • Plant Pipeline/Pump Station Rehab – $14.4 million
  • Storage/Operations Building - MCUA – $10.8 million
These projects reflect MCUA’s forward-looking investments in sustainable energy and operational efficiency.

1. MCUA Handles Wastewater for Nearly a Million People:
The Middlesex County Utilities Authority provides wastewater treatment and solid waste services for over 30 municipalities, covering nearly 850,000 residents in central New Jersey. Its Central Treatment Plant in Sayreville is one of the largest regional plants in the state.

2. Located Near the Historic Raritan River:
MCUA's Central Treatment Plant sits near the Raritan River, a key waterway that historically supported colonial shipping, industrial trade, and modern-day environmental restoration projects.

3. Pioneer in Renewable Natural Gas (RNG):
MCUA's $31 million RNG project makes it one of the first regional authorities in New Jersey to invest in capturing digester gas and upgrading it to pipeline-quality renewable natural gas—contributing to emissions reduction and sustainable operations.
